GOD'S HANDBOOK
FOR LIFE
Scripture Reading--2 Timothy 2:15, 3:14-17
Whether we're a new student, employee, or member, handbooks are a blessing. In handbooks, we learn what others expect of us. We discover lists of what we can and can't do and find explanations of the benefits we can enjoy. We read standards of conduct and appearance we must follow. We also read about penalties if we fail to live up to expectations.
Did you know that God has prepared a handbook for us? It's the book from which you read the Scripture reading a moment ago. The Bible, of course, is God's handbook for living. According to the Scripture reading, the Bible is "profitable" in the following ways:
1. For Doctrine--It teaches us what is right.
2. For Reproof--It teaches us what is not right.
3. For Correction--It teaches us how to make things right.
4. For Instruction--It teaches us how to keep things right.
What a blessing the Bible is! God has given us a book to teach us how to live. God has not only told us to please Him but also explained how. Those who would live to please God must be students of the Word. When we have a question about life, we should go to God's handbook for the answer. When we have a problem, we should reach for God's handbook. When we are confused, we should read God's handbook. Second Timothy 2:15 says, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
On February, 22, 1947, the late missionary Jim Elliot wrote the following to his father: "My grades came through this week and were as expected, lower than last semester. However I make not apologies and admit I've let them drag a bit for study of the Bible, in which I seek the degree, 'A.U.G.,' approved unto God."
ASSIGNMENT: Gather all the Bibles in your home and count how many copies you have. Sing "The B-I-B-L-E" together.
