LET'S BE A BARNEY
Scripture Reading--Acts 4:36-37
No, the Barney we're discussing is neither Barney Fife from Mayberry nor the purple dinosaur named Barney.
We're taking a close look at the biblical character Barnabas, whom his friends so named because he was a spiritual spark plug. Having viewed his character from Acts 11:24, we'll now focus on his conduct.
The Holy Spirit gives us at least five spiritual snapshots of the impact of encouragement from the life of Barnabas. First, in Acts 4:37-37, Barnabas encouraged others by his contribution. Persecution had come to the early church, but believers were thriving because of the spirit of unity and sharing. Barnabas, a Levite, sold a piece of property on the wealthy island of Cypress and gave all the profits to the church. This voluntary and sacrificial act of love, no doubt, blessed many.
One sure way to encourage others is to give to them financially. Luke 6:38 reminds us to "give, and it shall be given unto you." One of my college professors challenged us to give a "flying five"--to be an encouragement to fellow students financially. A "flying five" was an anonymous five-dollar gift went to their past office box or slid under their door. More than one student rejoiced because of the generosity of others. Yes, the "flying five" brightened the day of many. If we adjust for inflation, we'd better make today's "flying five" a "twirling twenty."
First John 3:17 reminds us, "But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?" Don't be a getter but a giver. Whose spirit could you lift today by investing in him financially? Invest in eternity by contributing a gift of love to someone in need. You will be glad you did, and so will he.
THOUGHT: Your are not living until you are giving.
