LET'S BE A BARNEY
Scripture Reading--Acts 11:25-26
Proverbs 13:10 warns, "Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom." Barnabas was not only an encourager but also a wise encourager. Antioch was ablaze with the power of God, and many Gentiles were being converted. The new disciples were growing and glowing in their faith so much that they had been branded "Christians" or followers of Christ. Barnabas knew that discipling these eager believers was too big a job for him to handle alone. His solution was to solicit Saul's assistance.
Barney was no glory boy; God's cause was bigger then his. Off to Tarsus he went to diligently seek Saul. We must remember that Saul's old cohorts, the Pharisees, hated and hunted him. Also, the church had not totally accepted him, so friends were at a premium. Imagine how Saul must have rejoiced when Barnabas appeared and announced that he had a wonderful ministry opportunity for Saul in Antioch. Barnabas' ministry of encouragement was marked by cooperation.
Selfish people work alone for their glory; humble people involve others for God's glory. In Ecclesiastes 4:9, Solomon declared, "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour." Exercising, dieting, studying, and ministering are all easier when we have a partner. Barnabas wanted to encourage both the disciples and the disciplees. He was looking for a spiritual win-win situation.
Years ago, my father involved me in the team effort of soul-winning. The effort certainly didn't need my youthful and inexperienced help, but often he took me with him on his witnessing adventures. His team spirit not only involved me but also instructed and inspired me so today I have a soul-winner's heart. Whom could you help and encourage today by involving him in your project? Do you know a Saul who has the potential to be a Paul if someone would give him the opportunity?
THOUGHT: If your cause is "the cause," you will experience contention. But if God's cause is "the cause," you will experience cooperation.
