LET'S BE A BARNEY
Scripture Reading--Acts 11:19-26
The Book of Acts tells an inspiring story of a man named Barnabas who made his reputation from his deep commitment to the ministry of encouragement. His give name was Joses, but those who knew him well nick-named him "Barnabas," which means son of consolation or encouragement.
Once, my car battery died in a Wal-Mart parking lot. I was surely grateful for the man who used jumper cables to start my car. I was soon back on the road. Many people find their spiritual lives stalled and need the "spiritual jumper cables" to infuse strength into their weakened condition.
Acts 11:24 details the following characteristics necessary for being a "Barney."
1. Barnabas Was an Honorable Man.
He was probably converted on the day of Pentecost, and God made him a "good man." We are not
born "good"; we must be born again to become good.
2. Barnabas Was a Holy Man.
He was full of the Holy Ghost and living under His control ( Eph. 5:18 ). God gave us the Holy Spirit
to make us holy saints.
3. Barnabas Was a Hopeful Man.
He was full of the Holy Spirit and faith. Only spiritually confident and courageous people can inspire
courage in others.
4. Barbabas Was a Helpful Man.
He was a soul-winner and helped men come to Christ so that "much people was added unto the
Lord" ( Acts 11:24 ).
Only spiritually converted, controlled, and confident people can challenge others to walk in victory.
One of the most consistent Christians I knew in Bible college was also one of the most exciting,
dynamic people I've ever met. He was worth imitating. Is that true of you?
THOUGHT: More people fall because they lack encouragement than for any other reason.
